This survey asks, "Does Your Organization Leverage Business Architecture for Digital Transformation?" In this small sampling, 47.2% of respondents indicated that their organization is leveraging business architecture for digital transformation to some degree. An additional 28.3% of respondents are not yet leveraging business architecture for digital transformation but are planning to. These results strongly indicate the continued interest and adoption of business architecture within a strategic, transformational, and impactful context.

Here are a few select comments for additional background and context:

Leveraging Business Architecture for Digital Transformation

  • Business architecture supports our startup to ensure that our business operations, as well as the business structure, develop aligned with our long-term strategy.
  • Business architecture provides the framework to engage stakeholders on the digital transformation journey.
  • New Walgreens Health business lines have external big 4 consultants paired with our business architecture practice to articulate strategy and derive investment plans.  Our established Boots business exclusively leverages our business architecture practice as the voice of IT which is embedded into the business strategy and planning.  Walgreens itself has begun to engage our business architecture practice in annual portfolio planning, as we are seeking pilots to engage earlier in strategy articulation with the transformation office (in discussions only at this stage).
  • We have several architects (myself included) with digital transformation experience as an architect.  We are often asked to work on programs with digital transformation scope and goals.
  • Translating the vision toward a roadmap of architectural business and IT building blocks, identifying key capabilities to develop, etc.

Not Leveraging Business Architecture for Digital Transformation

  • Our company tends to go from a strategic thought straight to solutions.
  • There is a heavy reliance on process reengineering as the path to simplifying/redesigning ahead of any technical work (including digital), while business architecture is a new and largely unknown practice.  So, there is not a digital transformation consideration at this point in time.
  • The organization has been technically led for so long that it is proving difficult to position business architecture.
